When the generator on my boat failed I had to fit a complete new generator section on the end of the diesel engine. This was done in the boat, but later a water pipe failure caused the engine to seized up. This meant raising the whole generator out of the engine bay and fit net pistons. A big project only for a good mechanic with tools, but I did it myself and saved a fortune.
