When I bought my old boat both the toilets were manually operated into a holding tank. They constantly leaked and the aluminum holding tank had perforated holes in it. I took the whole lot out and threw it all into the nearest dumpster. This article explains how new electric toilets were fitted, along with a United States Coast Guard waste treatment system, that makes a holding tank unnecessary.

The article also shows how to make the toilets flush with fresh water, which stops the foul smell associated with seawater toilets. This is one of the best modifications I have made to my boat.
