The chain locker on my schooner was hopelessly small for the 250’ feet of chain it had to store and every time we weighed someone had to go into the fo’c’sle and push the pile over - sometimes twice. This article explains in detail how the chain was re-routed into a larger locker further aft and it now self-stows every time. Being further aft it also made the bow lighter. It was easy to do and cost very little.
